Ruppersberger, Representative of NSA, Decries Forced Hiring of ‘Unqualified’ General Counsel
(Washington, DC) – Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger today issued the following statement after the hiring of Michael Ellis as General Counsel of the National Security Agency at the direction of the Acting Secretary of Defense:
“I have represented the National Security Agency and many of its hard-working employees since 2003. I have seen first-hand the work these non-partisan patriots do every day to protect our soldiers on the battlefield, as well as everyday Americans here at home.
Now, in the final hours of the Trump Administration, the White House and Acting Secretary of Defense have forced NSA to hire an inexperienced and unqualified attorney with a history of partisan gamesmanship into the senior role of General Counsel.
One of my biggest fears is that reckless and egocentric decisions like this will cause the federal government to lose some of our most valued and trusted civil servants. Intelligence is the best defense against terrorism and the civil servants at NSA and throughout the intelligence community are indispensable to this defense. They deserve better.
We must reverse the damage done to the civil service by this Administration.”
