Ruppersberger Issues Statement on ‘Guilty’ Ruling in Derek Chauvin Trial

Apr 20, 2021
Press Release
Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges by a jury in the death of George Floyd

(Washington, DC) –  Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger today issued the following statement after a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty in the death of George Floyd:

“Today was a good day for justice and for America. I may be a former prosecutor, but anyone who saw the horrific tapes of George Floyd’s death could see that the evidence against Derek Chauvin was clear and indisputable.

In murder cases, there is never any ‘real’ justice for loved ones left behind. George Floyd’s family will never get him back. For them and the thousands of other Americans who have lost a loved one at the hands of law enforcement, we must renew our commitment to eradicating the racism that has existed in American institutions for too long, starting with swift and substantive police reform. The Senate must immediately follow the House’s lead and pass the “Justice in Policing Act” to hold rogue officers accountable, change the culture of law enforcement and rebuild trust between police and the communities they are sworn to protect.”
