Ruppersberger is former Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee
(Timonium, MD) – Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) today issued the following statement after the announced death of ISIS founder and leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a joint operations mission in northwestern Syria:
“The death of ISIS founder al-Baghdadi is long-awaited and welcome news that makes us all safer. Baghdadi was a ruthless monster who was responsible for the deaths of many innocent civilians, the displacement of millions and the formation of a barbaric, twisted ideology that threatens free societies across the globe. I commend the dedicated United States joint special operations personnel who are nothing short of awe-inspiring in their craft. Intelligence is the best defense against terrorism. Our intelligence agencies deserve credit for the critical role they played in this dangerous mission, with help from our allies in the region, including the Kurds.
One thing we learned from the death of Osama bin Laden is that we can’t take our eye off the ball. The mission of protecting the homeland doesn’t stop when we take out key leadership. New groups will form and new recruits will be found. We must keep the pressure on and we need help from all of our partners in the region. We can’t afford to lose a single partner in this fight.”
