Ruppersberger Issues Statement on Alleged Russian-Backed Bounties on U.S. Troops
(Washington, DC) – Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) today called for full Congressional hearings into reports that Russia offered Taliban militants bounties for the heads of U.S. troops based in Afghanistan. He issued the following statement:
“If these reports are true, then Americans troops are in danger and some may have already died at the hands of Russia and the Taliban militants they paid off. President Trump has not denied the existence of the intelligence assessments – but has denied that he was briefed on the matter.
His limited comments raise more questions than answers. How long has this assessment existed? Why wasn’t the President briefed? Why weren’t the appropriate Congressional Committees – including the Gang of Eight – briefed? And how will the U.S. respond?
In the absence of Presidential and diplomatic leadership, Congress must be prepared to stand up for our troops and our brave intelligence community working to keep them safe.”
