Ruppersberger Issues Statement in Response to DOJ Indictment of Russian Intelligence Officers in Cyber Attacks

Oct 19, 2020
Press Release
Ruppersberger is former Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee

(Washington, DC) – “Today’s indictment against Russian intelligence officers behind some of the world’s most high-profile cyber attacks confirms that Vladimir Putin is willing to stop at nothing to achieve even minimal advantages and settle personal scores. These attacks were brazen and their effects costly, with targets ranging from other nations to Olympic athletes to a doctor’s office in western Pennsylvania and with damages totaling in the tens of billions of dollars.

While the Department of Justice is able to lay out a clear, fact-based accounting of Russia’s belligerence in cyberspace, we still have some leaders in our government who are incapable of criticizing the Kremlin. This indictment is music to the ears of all that value the truth and I implore President Trump to remember this the next time he has the attention of President Putin.

I congratulate the hard-working professionals of the U.S. intelligence community and law enforcement who have spent years investigating the abuses that led to the charges unsealed today.I hope this sends a powerful message – especially given Russia’s history of interference in America’s elections – that any efforts to weaponize cyber capabilities will not go  unchecked.”
