Ruppersberger: Invoke the 25th Amendment, Remove Trump From Office

Jan 6, 2021
Press Release

(Washington, DC) – Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger tonight issued the following statement after hundreds of pro-President Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the election:

“It’s a sad day for our country. Every American has the right to peacefully protest. But what happened today was a violent insurrection that resulted in death, injury and insurmountable damage to our nation’s reputation on the world stage.

Using dangerous rhetoric and false claims of a rigged election, President Trump has been encouraging his supporters to descend on Washington over the last several weeks. Then, today, he gave them clear instructions moments before they began their siege on the U.S. Capitol. ‘We're going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue... and we're going to the Capitol,’ he told them. ‘We’re going to try to give our Republicans – the weak ones because the strong ones don’t need any of our help – we’re going to try and give them the pride and boldness that they need to take back our country. So let’s walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.’

President Trump incited an attempted coup and then – even after shots were fired – fanned the flames by repeating his baseless allegations of election fraud without a shred of evidence.

While these offenses are impeachable, I believe the ability of the Vice President and cabinet secretaries to invoke the 25th Amendment – which would deem the President unable to discharge of his duties – is more expedient and appropriate at this time. President Trump should be removed from office now. He is a threat to our national security and a menace to democracy.

Yet democracy will always win. Tonight, Congress will vote to affirm Joe Biden as President, as certified by all of our states and upheld by our courts more than 60 times, including the Supreme Court.”
