Statement on Bergdahl Prisoner Swap

Jun 6, 2014
Floor Statement

Earlier this week, the President made an extremely difficult decision to release five Taliban prisoners in exchange for an American prisoner of war. I understand the President’s decision: he took what he saw as a narrow, near-term window of opportunity to save Sgt. Bergdahl’s life. I respect his decision.

That said, I remain concerned that this action may set a dangerous precedent that could put at risk the lives of other Americans around the world, including our men and women on the front lines. This sends a message to terrorists everywhere that captive troops can be used as leverage. Already, Taliban leaders are saying that we can expect to see more kidnappings in the future.

I stand by our commitment not to leave any solider behind on the battlefield, but I think it could have been done another way.
