Floor Statement on Military Construction/Veterans Funding

Ruppersberger Urges Members to Support H.R. 5822
Madam Speaker, I rise in support of H.R. 5822, the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2011.
During these difficult financial times, American families are asking us to cut spending and reduce our national deficit. This bill carefully evaluates our priorities while funding the quality health care, education and services our nation’s troops and veterans deserve.
This bill fully funds the President’s request of $2.4 billion to support the re-stationing of troops and their families under a program known as BRAC.
This consolidates military organizations to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
In Maryland, BRAC is bringing tens of thousands of new, high-paying jobs to Fort George Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground, both in my District. Team Maryland has worked hard to prepare for the move, improving our roads, expanding our schools and hospitals, and supporting local government.
At long last, we are starting to see the fruits of our labor and I am proud that my state will continue to lead the nation in improving our defense capabilities and mapping out the path to a secure future.
I’d like to thank Chairman Chet Edwards and the subcommittee for their tremendous work on this bill.
The subcommittee’s bipartisan efforts are truly improving the lives of our veterans and troops. You set politics aside and do what’s best for our country.
I encourage my colleagues to support this bill and I yield back the remainder of my time.
