House passes legislation to support veterans

Last night, I was proud to support a bipartisan package of bills that will honor our obligation to support our nation’s veterans. Among many other benefits, these bills aim to:
- Widen the eligibility pool for veterans to qualify for federal housing aid.
- Create a special panel to determine how to reduce and eventually eliminate the backlog of veterans disability claims and appeals.
- Expand education assistance programs for veterans and education benefits for certain survivors of deceased servicemembers.
- Extend certain reintegration programs for homeless veterans.
It is one of my highest honors to serve the many troops and U.S. veterans who call Maryland home. One of my office’s top priorities is working with local veterans caught in government red tape and I’ve witnessed first-hand the frustrations of many in the VA backlog. The situation is and has been unacceptable for years. I believe that the men and women who have made the greatest sacrifice – putting their lives on the line to defend our freedom – deserve the best care and resources when they return home. This legislation is part of that pledge.
