Today, I attended an exciting groundbreaking of a new General Motors facility in White Marsh, where the company will manufacture global rear-drive electric motors. This makes the plant the first electric motor manufacturing facility in the U.S. operated by a major automaker. The best part? New operations at the solar-powered plant are expected to add 200 new jobs.

GM’s $129 million investment in White Marsh came with the help of federal, state and local grants, so this was a true team effort.  By investing in innovative clean energy manufacturing projects like this, we are not only creating good jobs now, but helping lay a new foundation to keep America competitive in the 21st century economy and helping to fuel our energy independence. As the international market for hybrid and electric engines grows, GM is, and will continue to be, at the forefront.

As Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am deeply concerned that the money our country pays to foreign nations for oil often winds up in the pockets of terrorists.  Unstable foreign governments are holding us hostage with oil prices to the tune of $400 billion a year.

So, this is a win-win-win situation. We are creating jobs, investing in clean energy and contributing to our nation’s financial independence. This is a great day for Maryland and for our country.
