I am proud to announce that five scholars from Maryland’s Second Congressional District have been selected to receive the prestigious Fulbright awards to study, lecture, teach and research internationally this year. These scholarships are reserved for only the best and brightest students and professionals and it’s a great honor to represent so many of them in Congress.

Ensuring our nation’s veterans enjoy the quality of life they deserve is one of my top priorities in Congress. One of my proudest accomplishments has been the creation of a program called “Hero Miles,” which enables Americans to donate their unused frequent flyer miles to wounded warriors and their families. That program was recently expanded to include hotel reward points.

For the last eight years, a proposed liquefied natural gas facility at Sparrows Points has threatened the livelihoods and even lives of the surrounding communities including Dundalk, Sparrows Point, Turners Station and Edgemere. We recently received word that the proposal is officially dead in the water, thanks to the persistence and passion of our local community leaders.

While there are still many things topping Congress’ end of the year, “to-do list,” chief among them must be extending unemployment benefits for millions of jobless Americans. If Congress does not extend benefits, 1.3 million Americans will have their benefits cut off on December 28 and another 1.9 million will lose them during the first half of next year.
