Ruppersberger Issues Statement on Pelosi’s Decision to Step Down From Leadership

November 17, 2022

(Washington, DC) –  Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger today released the following statement after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she will not seek a party leadership position in the next Congress:

“Twenty years ago this month, Nancy Pelosi became the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives in our nation’s history. Since, she has been a drum major for democracy, holding our Administrations accountable and helping to usher in landmark legislation that makes life better for all Americans. From expanding affordable healthcare to job-saving pandemic response measures to historic investments in infrastructure, Speaker Pelosi’s leadership has been nothing short of masterful.

Though she has long represented her California district, Speaker Pelosi is a true Baltimorean at heart. It’s her roots, and the grit that comes from them, that have inspired her no-nonsense leadership approach, serving her and our country well for so long. She has been incredibly successful because she comes from a strong family tradition where relationships, integrity and mutual respect are paramount.

I respect her decision to pass the baton to a new era of Democratic leaders and am grateful for her continued service to our country in the U.S. Congress.”
